THE STORY BEHIND OUR NAME
Gloria wearing our blue bike helmet

A few years ago, Gloria (our founder and longtime cyclist), lost a close friend to a bike accident – a loss that could have been prevented if he had been wearing a helmet. His passing led Gloria to reflect on why she didn't wear a helmet while riding. She knew she had to change her perspective on safety gear, but she thought helmets were too bulky, too futuristic looking, and didn't fit her personal style.

She knew she had to make a change

Instead of settling for the uncomfortable helmets on the market, she got to work designing one that you'll actually want to wear.

WE NAMED OUR COMPANY "THOUSAND" AS A PROMISE.

Our name is a reference to our goal of helping to save 1000 lives by making helmets people actually want to wear. "Thousand" serves as a daily reminder of why we do what we do.

SAFETY IS WHY WE STARTED THOUSAND.

From our launch on Kickstarter in 2015 to now, we're grateful for each and every order that we ship, because it means another rider that's choosing to be safe by wearing a Thousand helmet. Every time a member of our community writes to us, letting us know their helmet kept them safe in an accident, we’re inspired to do even more and keep more riders safe on the road.

"My husband started riding to his work by bike and I gave him one of your helmets as a present. Three months later, he had an accident with a car, lost his memory for several hours, and was diagnosed with post-traumatic amnesia. The neurologist told me that it could be brain damage and that we have to wait for him to rest and watch for his recovery. When he woke up the next day, he started remembering things and now he's totally recovered. The helmet was broken and I can't stop thinking what would have happened to his head without the helmet. Our lives would be different by now, so thank you from the bottom of my heart."

"I was riding my skateboard home after work on Thursday like any other day in New York City. Next thing I know I woke up in an ambulance bruised, bleeding, but alive. The EMT and soon after the doctor informed me that I was blindsided by a car and thrown into the road, splashing my temple/forehead into the street/edge of a sidewalk. If I had not been wearing your helmet, I would not have been having that conversation or sending this email. I am forever grateful."
